Our New Chairman for 2012
Mr Neil Howie
North Lyham, Northumberland
North Lyham, which is situated in North Northumberland, is a
tenanted farm of 590 acres. Rising from 200’ up to 640’ above sea
level. Approximately half the area is less favoured.
The
three main enterprises are sheep (650 ewes) beef (60 suckler cows)
and arable (180 acres). The sheep enterprise consists of a number of
breeds. There are 100 Vendeen ewes which are mostly lambed in the
first half of February, and all other ewes are lambed in April.
The
top 30/40% of Vendeen ewes lambs are kept as flock replacements and
the best 20 to 25 ram lambs are kept to sell as rams. All other
Vendeen lambs are slaughtered mainly to a local butcher and farm
shop, where customers enjoy exquisite carcase quality. Top French
bloodlines are used every two to three years through A.I.
We
also have 30 Border Leicester ewes from which we aim to produce a
pen of shearlings at Kelso Ram Sales. In addition to this we have:-
-
100 Cheviot ewes crossed with Cheviot or Border Leicester to produce
scotch half bred ewes.
- 60
Blackface ewes crossed with Border Leicester rams to produce
greyfaced ewes.
-
250 Scotch half bred ewes crossed with Vendeen rams for prime lamb
production.
- 60
Greyfaced ewes also crossed with Vendeen Rams for prime lamb
production.
- 50
Vendeen cross Suffolk or Texel ewes.
Lambs from the commercial flock are sold both live and dead weight.
The
Beef enterprise consists of mainly Limousin or Simmental cross cows,
mated at present with Limousin or Parthenais sires. Calves are sold
as stores at 12 months of age.
The
Cereal crops grown are mainly winter wheat, winter and spring barley
and oil seed rape.
